How Hard Is North County Water? The Published Numbers

Hard water is the rule around Paso Robles and Atascadero: the two local systems that print hardness in their 2025 reports both land in the USGS "very hard" range.

Hard water around Paso Robles and Atascadero shows up as white crust on faucets, spotted glasses and scale in kettles and water heaters. Two north county water systems publish a hardness figure in their latest annual reports, and both sit well above the U.S. Geological Survey's line for very hard water.

The local figures

The Atascadero Mutual Water Company's 2025 report gives an average total hardness of 20.2 grains per gallon, ranging from 16 to 26. The San Miguel Community Services District, which draws only on wells, reports an average of 317 ppm with a range of 263 to 358, from samples taken in 2023 and 2024, in its 2025 Consumer Confidence Report.

The two use different units. At 17.1 mg/L to the grain, San Miguel's 317 ppm works out to about 18.5 grains per gallon by our arithmetic, and Atascadero's 20.2 grains to roughly 345 mg/L. The USGS scale calls 0 to 60 mg/L soft, 61 to 120 moderately hard, 121 to 180 hard, and anything over 180 very hard. Both towns sit well inside "very hard."

We could not get a current hardness figure for the City of Paso Robles or Templeton. Customers there should check the latest Consumer Confidence Report from the City of Paso Robles or the Templeton CSD.

Private wells

A household well can read harder or softer than any town system. Ask an accredited lab to include hardness with your regular round; testing your well water explains the schedule. In the state's well-owner booklet, white spotting on dishes and crusty fixtures point to calcium and magnesium, with a softener named as the fix. A softener deals with hardness only; it does not remove arsenic or nitrate, which need their own lab tests. Our stories on softeners and filters and water heaters and hard water follow the scale into the house.
